Tell Me Not It has No Soul

A dog’s love is most manifest;
It seeks not power, nor control,
Passing every acid test,
Playing its unassuming role –
So tell me not it has no soul!
Misfortune cannot take its zest,
Nor narrow down its faithful role,
To be a loyal friend at best
Being its one and only goal –
So tell me not it has no soul!
In joy, bereavement, sickness, pain,
A dog stays by its owner, close,
Silent, sad, it must remain
Sorrowful, with no repose,
Not until it surely knows
It must focus on its goal
To forever be a friend
While it plays its noble role
To protect and to defend –
So tell me not it has no soul!
